Online Voting in America?
Although America is one of the leading nations in technological advancements, it has not yet adopted the commonly accepted overseas method of voting in national elections online. An article by Julianne Pepitone discusses the various reasons America is so hesitant to adopt online voting, despite being so ready to adopt so many other advancements in society. People who approve of the idea of online voting have said that doing so will boost the nations participation in elections, naysayers on the other hand fear that online voting will open doors for hackers in the election. Others who oppose online voting disapprove because they find it "culturally distasteful." The concept of such a change is viewed as a threat to American values by some, as they fear the corruption of American fundamentals. One reason some Americans give for wanting to adopt online voting is so that soldiers overseas may be able to cast their vote in the election. This concept has proven attractive to those of us Americans who strongly honor American defense. Thus, the debate over whether or not Americans should adopt online voting has become more about cultural and social norms, and whether or not to change them than it is about online elections.
